Everything you need to know before you arrive in Yogyakarta — from guides who live here.
Getting Here
How to reach Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) in Kulon Progo receives direct flights from Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia), Singapore (Scoot), and major Indonesian cities. The airport opened in 2020 and is 40 minutes west of the city. Take the airport train (Yogya Airport Express) to Yogyakarta station — clean, cheap, 40 minutes. Older Adisucipto Airport (JOG) receives domestic flights and is closer to the city centre.
Java's rail network is excellent. Jakarta → Yogyakarta takes 7–8 hrs on the Argo Lawu (executive class, book 2 weeks ahead). Surabaya → Yogyakarta: 5 hrs. Bandung → Yogyakarta: 7 hrs. All trains arrive at Yogyakarta Tugu station, a 5-minute walk from Malioboro. Book at KAI Access app.
Comfortable sleeper buses run from Jakarta (9–10 hrs, overnight), Bali (12–13 hrs), and Surabaya (5–6 hrs). The main terminal is Giwangan, outside the city — from there, grab (rideshare) to your hotel.
Self-driving is possible but demanding — Java's main roads are scenic but slow. We recommend hiring a driver for any journeys beyond Yogyakarta's city limits. Our overland tours include private vehicles with experienced drivers.
Events & Festivals
What's on in Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta's calendar is rich with royal ceremonies, cultural festivals, and artistic events throughout the year. Timing your visit around these moments adds a layer to the trip that no tour itinerary can replicate.
Held each Islamic New Year, Sekaten is one of Yogyakarta's oldest royal ceremonies. The Kraton opens its gamelan sets — some over 500 years old — and the Alun-Alun fills with a month-long market. The final night procession (Grebeg Maulud) draws enormous crowds and is unmissable.
Held in October on even years, this festival brings batik artists, workshops, and exhibitions from across Indonesia and Southeast Asia. The Prawirotaman area hosts street exhibitions, demonstrations, and open studios.
Each August, Malioboro transforms into an outdoor performance space. Street artists and musicians from across the world perform for free along the main street. This is Yogyakarta at its most joyful.
The palace marks its founding anniversary with royal ceremonies and traditional dances inside the Kraton — a rare opportunity to see ceremonies normally closed to the public. Ask your guide for private ceremonial viewing access.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Yogyakarta
The artists' quarter south of the Kraton is the best area for culturally curious travellers. Quiet streets, galleries, good restaurants within walking distance, and boutique accommodation at every price point. 10 minutes by rickshaw from Malioboro.
The most convenient location for first-timers — you can walk to the main sights. Can be noisy. Plenty of options from USD 20 guesthouses to boutique hotels at USD 120+.
Yogyakarta has excellent budget accommodation — clean guesthouses with AC and breakfast from USD 12–25. The Sosrowijayan area (Jl. Sosrowijayan) has the highest concentration of backpacker-friendly options.
Several world-class boutique hotels are in the Prawirotaman district. The Dusun Yogyakarta and Rumah Dharma are favourites among our guests. We are happy to make specific recommendations based on your style and budget — just ask.
Cultural Tips
Respecting local culture
Yogyakarta is a Sultanate city with deep cultural and religious traditions. Following these simple guidelines will ensure your visit is respectful and welcomed.
Cover shoulders and knees when entering Borobudur, Prambanan, the Kraton, and mosques. Sarongs are provided at Borobudur if needed. Tank tops and short shorts are fine on Malioboro but not inside sacred sites.
Always ask before photographing people, especially at markets and during ceremonies. Most locals are happy to be photographed — just ask with a smile. Inside some temple areas, photography of specific shrines may be restricted.
Bargaining is expected at Pasar Beringharjo and souvenir stalls. Not appropriate at restaurants, hotels, or fixed-price shops. Our guides will help you understand where haggling is appropriate and what a fair price looks like.

Guide's Tip
"The best version of Yogyakarta exists before 8am. The markets, the temples, the city — all of it is different in that early light. If you sleep in, you miss the city that locals actually live in."
